Job Description:

Develops, leads, coordinates and implements packaging projects, including sterile and non-sterile packaging system designs, package processes, package testing, and specification of materials to ensure proper configuration requirements. Responsible for ensuring that packaging is functional, cost effective, and promotes the needs of the customer and desired company image. Maintains an awareness of current packaging and sterilization advances and technologies relative to medical devices and/or other health care products. The Packaging Engineer will work closely with Smith & Nephew cross-functional teams to develop and/or transfer packaging designs in support of R&D, Marketing, Quality, Regulatory, and Operations, per the guidelines of ISO 11607-1&2 and Smith & Nephew procedures. This position will report to the Packaging Product Development Engineering Director. Responsibilities: Packaging Development & Packaging Projects Supports key Operations transfers, Quality initiatives, and Packaging Performance improvement projects. Responsible for packaging development of legacy products when devices are not consistent or compatible with current packaging applications or standards. Designs and develops sterile and non-sterile packaging systems for products with limited supervision. Coordinates and monitors packaging projects and programs from inception through implementation. Designs packaging components and develops packaging systems for existing products and/or product lines in compliance with industry and Smith & Nephew standards under general supervision. Define, develop, lead and implement packaging designs across product lines in collaboration with the product development teams. New designs must meet product design requirements including labeling and sterilization. Work directly with R&D Managers, Process Engineering Managers, and Product Managers to develop new packaging designs that are cost effective and still meet aggressive time line requirements Effectively coordinates packaging projects, process improvements, packaging improvements, flow improvement, process standardization, regulatory compliance and cost reduction initiatives with multi-functional teams from Manufacturing, Quality, Packaging Engineering, Facilities, Finance, and outside suppliers and equipment manufacturers Writes and performs IQ's, OQ's, PQ's and Design Specifications. Performs tests on new packages as the need arises. Maintains complete records of packaging process and equipment design activities, test data, and other pertinent information for each project Works under supervision from Senior Engineers / Engineering Management with significant opportunity for individual action. Establishes appropriate project schedules and prepares project reports periodically to outline progress. Works with the labeling and graphics team to assist in the development and implementation of Instructions for Use (IFU) and labeling for Packaging Systems. Communicates effectively with cross functional teams, such as R&D, Marketing, Clinical, Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance, Purchasing, and Operations Develops protocols and reports for packaging feasibility studies and Design Verification Studies for new and legacy products. Works effectively with Smith & Nephew packaging suppliers. Prepares reports/documentation using good documentation practices and effectively communicates results cross-functionally and vertically within the organization. Ensure all packaging projects follow regulatory and corporate guidelines. Maintains complete records for package related activities, including test data, and enters information into PLM system in compliance with design control processes and procedures. Develops material specifications for package components and raw materials. Develops effective working network with outside vendors and manufacturers in order to use their resources in implementing packaging initiatives. Packaging Sustaining / Product Line Transfer Creates and reviews Engineering Change Requests for packaging for design changes Effectively works with manufacturing process teams to implement new design changes quickly and effectively Assists in the development of standardized test procedures, polices, and standards Communicates with Marketing and Product Development to coordinate packaging and labeling requirements for products being developed or modified Leads or assists with Corrective and Preventative Actions (CAPA) and/or remediation projects as necessary Coordinates with Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance on the requirements for package inserts, Q.C. procedures, testing for packages and/or packaging materials, labeling for IDE submissions, etc. Assists business initiative packaging projects as the need arises Supports packaging productivity efforts Location: Mansfield MA Requirements Education: Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering/Science or related technical area Licenses/ Certifications: None Required Experience: Internship/Co-op experience preferred at minimum. Knowledge of ISO 11607 Part 1 & 2. Exposure or experience of Medical Device Packaging preferred. Competences: Project and Time Management skills required. Able to work independently and within cross-functional team environment. Basic Solid works/AutoCAD skills preferred, but not required.
